Description

Rock Mill is a late 18th-century mill with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof.

The main range is three storeys with an attic, featuring five first-floor windows, and is accompanied by a set-back range to the right, four storeys high with two first-floor windows. A further single-storey range is located to the right, alongside a mill chimney. The main range has quoins to the angles. The first floor has a band. The left side features double plank pitching doors with a divided cambered overlight, and six- and 20-pane cambered-headed windows. Similar windows are present on the second floor, with the fourth blocked. All windows have plain reveals, sills, and cambered arches with keystones. Second, third and top floor bands denote the floors. The attic retains remnants of a casement window, a blind opening, and the remains of a board door. There is a small central pediment, partially hidden by a board hoist casing. The ground floor includes an off-centre entrance with a board door and cambered overlight, further board doors with cambered overlights, and two six-pane cambered windows, all with flat gauged arches and keystones. Circular iron tie beam ends are visible on both front and rear facades.

The range to the right predominantly has 20-pane cambered-headed casements, two per floor, with sills and cambered arches with keystones. First and second floor bands, and a third-floor sill band delineate the floors. A board door with a cambered arch marks the central ground-floor entrance. A modillion cornice is also present. The right end has a stack, while the left side features plank doors under a round arch and garage doors. The chimney is characterised by banding and a cornice. Similar windows are found at the rear.

Internally, the main range contains mill wheels by Lampitt, Millwright, Todenham. The range to the right retains an original fireplace in the right-hand room.
