Description

Portobello Bridge is a road bridge over the River Avon, built in 1831 and restored in 1892. It was almost certainly designed by John Nichol, the County Surveyor, with Thomas Townshend as the contractor. The bridge is faced with ashlar and features brick arches. It has three spans with wide elliptical arches that include rusticated voussoirs and tall niches in the piers. The arches rise from moulded plinths. A late 19th-century wrought-iron pedestrian walkway is located on the north side, featuring a lattice parapet, while another walkway was added on the south side in the mid-20th century, which has steel railings.
