Description
This is a pair of houses located at 159 and 161 Rugby Road in Royal Leamington Spa. They were likely built around 1830, with later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, and have a Welsh slate roof.
The houses are three storeys high, with four windows on the first floor. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, while the second-floor windows are 3/6 sashes. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills. A decorative frieze and cornice run along the top of the facades, terminating in a blocking course.
The central entrance features a pair of 3-panel doors. The lower panel of each door has a roll-moulded detail, and there are overlights above, with the right-hand overlight containing glazing bars. The doors are contained within a detailed surround, with a continuous frieze and cornice above. The ground-floor windows are 8/8 sashes, with the window on the right side set in a similar detailed surround as the entrance. Chimneys are visible at the front, rear, and along the ridge of the roof.
The interior of the houses has not been inspected. They form an architectural group with the nearby Coventry Arms (number 157).
