Description
The churchyard wall and lychgate are from 1879, designed by George Gilbert Scott junior, with a 20th-century lychgate added later. The wall is constructed of reddish-brown brick with ashlar copings and is approximately 1.25 metres high. It has a stepped and chamfered plinth and double-chamfered copings with an upper roll-moulding. Octagonal piers mark the entrances to the west and the corners of the wall. The lychgate features double plank gates supported by column clusters with arched braces and tie beams. It has a hipped roof covered in plain tiles, gothic tracery to the sides, and a cast-iron gate to the east with decorative lancets and slender bars. An inscription reads 'ENTER INTO HIS GATES WITH THANKSGIVING' and 'In memory of Lieut. Gen. Sir John Lindesay Keir K.G.B. churchwarden of/ this church erected by his friends in church and the Royal Artillery and Town'. The wall abuts the Church of St Mark on its left-hand end. The wall forms a significant feature in the surrounding streetscape and contributes to the setting of the church.
