Description

A pair of semi-detached villas dating to approximately 1834-8, located in Royal Leamington Spa. The buildings are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, topped with a Welsh slate roof. They feature a cast-iron verandah. The properties are two storeys high with basements and attics to the gables, incorporating single-storey, single-bay side ranges.

The first floor of the main range has 8/8 sash windows set in plain reveals with tooled architraves and sills. The ground floor has 6-pane French windows with divided overlights. The end ranges incorporate part-glazed doors, a frieze, cornice, and a blocking course. Basement windows are 8/8 sashes, mostly concealed. Attic dormers are present on No.17 and attics are incorporated into the gable ends, both alike in design. Two 6/6 sash windows are found in each attic.

A continuous verandah runs along the front with double rod-and-anthemion-and-paterae motifs to the balustrades and uprights, along with a scrolled frieze.

The rear elevations have basements extending to street level. Entrances are via part-glazed doors with tooled architraves; No.16 has a dentil cornice, while No.17 has a plain cornice. Tripartite sashes, featuring 6/6 panes between 2/2 panes with cambered heads, are a prominent feature. Ground floors have tripartite windows with 2/2 panes between 1/1 sashes. First-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, with an additional 6/6 sash with margin-lights on No.16.

The interior has not been inspected.

Milverton Crescent was laid out and the south half built between 1834 and 1838. These villas form an architectural group with Nos. 12-15 (consecutive) Milverton Crescent and Milverton House (No.11 Beauchamp Hill). Access to Milverton Crescent is pedestrian only, with the main access being from the rear, via Strathearn Road.
