Description
The Old Almshouses, dated 1594, are a range of ten almshouses located on the Village Green in Stoneleigh. Founded by Sir Thomas and Dame Alice Leigh, the buildings are constructed of red sandstone ashlar and feature a steeply pitched plain tile roof with gabled ends. There is a plinth and a date stone marked '1594' with a dripmould above it. The structure is one storey with attics and has a symmetrical design, with each doorway flanked by a window on either side and a single dormer to the left above.
The almshouses include five chamfered stone four-centred doorways and ten mid-19th century leaded two-light casements set in chamfered square openings with oak lintels. There are five gabled dormers, each with leaded two-light casements. Each doorway leads into a passage formed by timber-framed partitions with plastered panels, with doors on either side providing access to a house consisting of two rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. The buildings are topped with five tall stone chimney stacks that have moulded caps, spaced out evenly along the range.
