Description

The sewer gas exhaust pipe, approximately 20 meters south of No. 21 Leam Terrace in Royal Leamington Spa, is a decorative structure dating from the early 19th century. Standing about 4 meters high, this cast iron pipe is circular in section and features a tapering base adorned with mouldings and a frieze of lotus leaves. Towards the top, there is a second decorative section that includes an applied scallop detail and rows of knobbed details. An oval plate at the base bears the number 116.

Leam Terrace was built between 1828 and 1836 as part of the planned expansion of Leamington Spa, a wide street lined with Regency villas. The sewer system likely dates from this same period, suggesting that the installation of this and another sewer gas exhaust pipe was intended to allow the escape of dangerous gases from the sewers beneath the streets. Both pipes remain in their original locations.

This sewer gas exhaust pipe is listed for its intact and decorative design, representing an increasingly rare type of street furniture, and for its early role in the development of underground sewage disposal systems. It also has strong group value with the other sewer gas exhaust pipe and the listed Regency villas in Leam Terrace, reflecting the planned expansion of the town in the early 19th century.
