Description

This property comprises three townhouses at 18, 18A, and 19 Rother Street, originally likely dating from the 17th century, although it was significantly altered in the 19th century. The building has a timber-frame structure with a painted brick facade and a tile roof, incorporating some 20th-century replacements. A brick ridge stack is located at the rear. The building’s plan is based around three units. It is two storeys high with a three-window front. A modillioned cornice runs along the top of the facade. Two 20th-century shop fronts are present, framing the entrance to No. 18A, which has a 20th-century door. The first-floor windows are 20th-century casements. The interior features exposed stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. It is thought the building may have originally served as a rear wing to No. 23 Greenhill Street, formerly the Old Thatch Tavern, and is included in the listing primarily for its contribution to the group value of the surrounding area.
