Description
Canal Bridge Number 55, also known as Wootton Hill Farm Bridge, is a split bridge built around 1812 to 1816, with 20th-century restorations. It features brick abutments, which are cement rendered in some areas, and supports two cantilevered cast-iron decks. The decks include cross-framed integral handrails and are designed with splits for tow ropes. The solid brick parapet walls are splayed and topped with brick and stone coping.
The South Stratford Canal, which this bridge is part of, was constructed between 1793 and 1816 at a cost of £500,000. In 1960, 13.5 miles of the canal, stretching from Kingswood Junction in Lapworth to Stratford-upon-Avon, were leased by the National Trust from the British Waterways Board for restoration, and the National Trust acquired the freehold around 1964.
