Description

Cruck Cottage is a cottage that was formerly three separate dwellings, dating from the 15th century. The right section was refaced or added in 1726, as indicated by the date and initials IHS on a stone. The remainder of the cottage was refaced in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame with some lath and plaster infill, and is refaced in whitewashed brick. The right section has regular coursed lias up to the sill height, along with a brick string course. The roof is covered with old tiles, and there are brick stacks at both the internal and end positions.

The cottage has a 2-unit through-passage plan and is one storey with an attic, while the right section has two storeys. It includes a three-window range and a studded plank door. The windows are a mix of 18th, 19th, and 20th-century casements with glazing bars, along with two long narrow windows replacing doors and two dormers. Most ground floor openings have segmental brick arches, and the window on the right features a cambered brick relieving arch. The left return side shows some exposed framing with whitewashed brick infill. At the rear, there is exposed timber framing and an original 5-light wood mullioned and transomed window made of rough timber framing. Inside, there is a lias open fireplace with a broad-chamfered bressumer and a bread oven. Additionally, there is a 20th-century one-storey and attic addition on the right.
