Description
A terrace of eleven town houses built in the 1820s. The houses are constructed of brick with buff brick headers and stucco dressings, and have a slate roof with brick end stacks and five cross-axial stacks. They follow a double-depth plan. The architectural style is Georgian.
The terrace is two storeys high and has a 17-window front. Most of the houses are one window wide, but numbers 21, 23, 26, and 28 feature windows above the entrances, and number 30 is a symmetrical three-window house. A top cogged brick cornice runs along the top of the building. The entrances are characterised by architraves, friezes, and cornices, with most having six-panel doors; some entrances are elliptical-headed with plank doors. The windows have sills and rusticated wedge lintels with keys over twelve-pane sashes. Number 20 has a central entrance with a casement window above, with entrances positioned to the right of the windows—the entrance to number 20 also has an overlight. Numbers 23 to 25 form a symmetrical composition around a central entrance featuring a blind window above, with paired entrances to either side, flanked by windows. Number 24 has twentieth-century doors and casement windows, while number 25 has a twentieth-century door and four-pane sashes. Numbers 26 to 29 form two symmetrical compositions with a central entrance and blind window above, flanked by entrances and windows – number 26 has a four-panel door and number 28 has a half-glazed panelled door. Number 30 has an entrance with a stained glass overlight and a blind window above; the right return features a sixteen-pane sash window.
The development of College Lane is associated with the land previously occupied by a medieval priests' college, which was removed in 1799, and comprises early nineteenth-century housing of good quality.
