Description

This is a terrace of five houses located on Shakespeare Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, built in the 1840s as part of the early 19th-century development of the town’s New Town area. The buildings are constructed of brick with buff-coloured headers, stucco dressings, and a slate roof punctuated by four brick chimney stacks arranged crosswise. Designed in the Georgian style, the terrace is two stories tall and presents a symmetrical five-window façade. A top brick cornice runs along the top of the building. The entrances, positioned alternating with the windows, are framed by moulded doorcases featuring paterae and cornices. Most entrances have overlights with margin lights above six-panel doors. However, No. 2 has a 20th-century glazed door and fanlight, No. 5 has a half-glazed door and plain overlight, and No. 6 has a half-glazed door. The windows have sills and rusticated wedge lintels with keystones above sixteen-pane sashes. Windows in No. 2 are 20th-century casements, No. 5 has four-pane horned sashes, and No. 6 also has 20th-century casements. Information about the building is held within the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Record Office.
