Description
54 and 55 Shakespeare Street are a pair of houses built between 1836 and 1837. They are constructed of brick with buff headers and have stucco dressings, topped with a slate roof and brick end stacks. Designed in the Georgian style, the houses are two storeys high and feature a symmetrical four-window arrangement. A top brick cornice runs along the building.
The round-headed entrances, including a central entry, have blind fanlights that display a faint radial glazing-bar pattern. The entrance to No. 54 features a four-flush-panel door, while No. 55 has a plank door for its entry and a 20th-century half-glazed door. The ground floor has canted bay windows with cornices above, containing 4:12:4-pane sashes, although the bay window of No. 55 has been altered. The first-floor windows have sills and are topped with rusticated wedge lintels over 12-pane sashes. This pair of houses is part of the early 19th-century development in the northern part of Stratford, known as New Town.
