Description
The Recession Public House, formerly known as One Elm Inn, is a public house located on Guild Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, dating from around 1835. It is built of painted brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof with brick end stacks, showcasing a Georgian style. The building stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window range, topped with a modillioned brick cornice. The entrance is marked by a doorcase with panelled pilasters and an entablature, leading to a 20th-century half-glazed door.
The façade includes two-storey canted bay windows with cornices above 4:12:4-pane horned sashes, while the second floor features windows with sills and rusticated wedge lintels with keys over 6-pane sashes. At the rear, there is a two-storey lean-to outshut with a bay window on the right return. The gabled wing facing Shakespeare Street has some exposed brick with buff headers and includes two entrances, one leading to No. 60 Shakespeare Street. The varied windows on this side have segmental heads or rusticated wedge lintels over sashes, with 12-pane sashes on the first floor. This building is part of the early 19th-century development of the northern part of Stratford, known as New Town.
