Description

The Baptist Chapel, built in 1864 on the site of a Moravian chapel, is a single-storey structure located on Village Street in Temple Grafton. It features coursed dressed blue lias stone with alternating narrow courses and a brick outshut, topped with a steeply pitched old tile roof.

The chapel has a three-window range and a lean-to outshut on the left side. To the right, there is a gabled porch with a round-headed entrance that has an ovolo-moulded architrave and a fanlight with radial glazing bars above a four-flush-panel door. Above this entrance, a segmental-headed window, which lights the gallery stair, has a cambered arch with a key block and small-paned glazing. The main elevation includes two round-headed windows with plastered sills and small-paned fixed glazing, along with opening panes. The left outshut features a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door, while the returns have high round-headed windows. The rear of the chapel also has round-headed windows.

Inside, the roof is ceiled over the collars of two hammerbeam trusses with stop-chamfered members. The interior includes wainscoting, and the gallery is supported by two timber columns with stick balusters over fielded panels. The dais features turned balusters over fielded panelling and lamps mounted on metal columns. The porch contains a winding stone stair with stick balusters over fielded panelling. A leaflet about the chapel is available in the District Council records from 1983.
