Description

Bearley Manor is a manor house that incorporates former farm buildings and an adjoining barn, which is now used as a garage. It dates back to around 1600, with earlier origins in the cellar and later additions and alterations, including 19th-century stucco on the front facade and rebuilding at the rear during the 19th and 20th centuries, with a right-side extension added in the 1950s. The barn, located at the rear right, is from the late 18th century.

The main facade faces the garden and features small timber-framing on the left side, with an unpainted stucco front and pinkish-brown brick at the rear, topped with a plain-tile roof. The building has an irregular plan and consists of two original bays on the left, with a taller, projecting off-centre range that has a crow-stepped gable, and a further range to the right. It is two storeys high with attics and has a six-window range. The entrance to the taller range is off-centre and features a glazed door behind a Doric porch with a frieze and dentil cornice.

The windows throughout are mainly metal casements with two, three, and four lights. On the ground floor to the left, there is a canted bay with four-plus-four-pane French windows in the center and six-over-six sash windows on the sides, along with an additional eight-over-eight sash window. Above the entrance, there is a two-light casement window with Gothic glazing, and a small inserted window is located in the right range on the first floor to the left. The attic includes a fixed light window to the left and a casement window in the taller range, with another casement window on the left gable end. The roof features a raised parapet with copings, hipped on the taller range and gabled elsewhere. An external stack is present at the left end, with ridge and rear stacks featuring cornices.

Inside, the staircase in the taller range is curved and has stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The interior also includes plank and six-panel doors, and the cellar has a brick floor believed to be from the Elizabethan period. The adjoining barn has a queen strut roof.

Bearley Manor Barn and the cart shed form a group with Manor Cottage and Tudor Cottage.
