Description

Piper’s Cottage is a house, possibly dating back to the 16th century, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and has rendered brick cladding, with a thatched roof and a brick axial stack. Originally, the house followed a three-unit cruck-trussed plan, although now only two units survive, as the north unit was rebuilt and is now integrated into an adjacent property.

The house is single-storey with an attic, and has a two-window front. A segmental-headed entrance on the left side has a 20th-century half-glazed door. The ground floor has two segmental-headed windows with 19th-century two-light casements with small panes; eyebrow dormers on the first floor contain matching smaller casements. The return side has 20th-century casement windows to both floors. The rear features a 20th-century kitchen extension and a large four-light French window, and a section of the original cruck blade is exposed.

Inside, there are two rooms, now divided by a large chimney stack with back-to-back fireplaces. The original cruck truss remains, although the apex is not visible, with a halved tie beam, spur tie and blocking piece. Large purlins and wind braces are also present. The right-hand room was re-roofed, likely in the 18th century.
