Description
Forge Cottage is a house that includes a former blacksmith's forge, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is faced in cob or possibly timber-frame and stretcher-bond brick, topped with a thatched roof featuring half-hipped and gabled ends, and a brick axial stack located at the rear of the ridge.
The plan consists of a small two-unit layout, with the unit on the right being unheated and rear outshuts. A 19th-century forge has been added to the left, and a 20th-century addition is on the right. The exterior is single storey with an attic. The entrance, positioned to the right of the center, features a 19th-century panelled door. To the left of the entrance is a large window with a 20th-century four-light casement. There are wall stud remains to the left of this window. The gable ends have 20th-century attic casements. The former forge to the left has a concrete tile roof and two entrances; the left entrance is segmental-headed with plank doors, accompanied by three small square windows with 20th-century casements. The 20th-century addition has a slate roof.
Inside, the small main room includes a chamfered beam with cavetto-step stops at one end and a large brick fireplace with a chamfered bressumer that has worn stops at one end. There is an entrance hall with a stair leading to the rear. The common-rafter roof features exposed purlins in the attic rooms, with the rafters replaced above the purlin level. The former forge contains tie-beam trusses, one with a king post and the other halved and crossed at the apex, along with a 20th-century fireplace.
