Description
Sandfield Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse with alterations and additions from the early 19th century. The structure is timber-framed with brick infill, blue lias rubble to the cellar, and a renewed tile roof with brick stacks to the rear. The original plan was based on a two-unit design, later expanded with two rear wings forming a rectangular layout, and a single-storey service wing at the rear.
The exterior presents as a symmetrical two-story, three-window front with an attic. The early 19th-century brick facade is distinguished by a top modillioned brick cornice taken over a gablet. The entrance features a wooden architrave and bracketed gabled canopy over a small-paned overlight and a six-flush-panel door. Segmental-headed windows on the ground floor have three-light transomed, pegged, small-paned casements with iron opening mechanisms; similar windows are present on the first floor, flanking a segmental-headed two-light window with a similar cross-casement. A blind lunette is set into the gable. The roof is gabled.
The left return exhibits exposed square framing and two-light small-paned casements on each floor. A wing features a modillioned brick cornice, a canted bay window with small-paned glazing under a hipped slate roof, a three-light small-paned casement above, and a cross-axial stack. The right return displays brick cladding on the gable, with a wing showcasing exposed timber framing and some brick repair on the ground floor, along with two-light small-paned casements and a cross-axial stack.
The rear of the farmhouse has two gables, one to the left showing exposed timber framing with a single-storey wing having a hipped roof with a gablet and stack, a lean-to porch, and a brick wing projecting under a asymmetrical gable. An entrance leads to a six-panel door. The right return of the single-storey wing has an entrance with wide-boarded door and a window featuring a three-light small-paned casement. A right wing has a window replacing a former entrance, a segmental-headed window with a three-light pegged small-paned casement, and a similar two-light casement to the attic.
The interior retains features such as chamfered beams with moulded stops, some exposed studs and wall beams, and a flagged ground floor. A room on the right has a large fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. A rear room contains a partition with a re-set three-light small-paned casement with original leaded glazing. The porch contains a pump, and a service wing has a large fireplace with a bressumer, offset breast, bread oven, pot bracket, and a copper in the corner. The roof structure includes trusses with collars and queen struts, wind braces, and a gypsum floor to the rear. The cellar has stone benches and a salting block.
