Description

Nos. 197, 198, and 199 on Village Street are three houses built in the 17th century, with later alterations and additions. They feature a timber-frame construction with painted brick infill set on a blue lias rubble plinth. The houses have steeply pitched roofs that have been renewed with tiles, along with brick end stacks and a stack at the rear of the ridge. The layout consists of a three-unit plan, plus an 18th-century taller one-unit addition to the right.

The exterior is single storey plus attic, rising to two storeys, and presents a five-window range. To the left of the center, there is a segmental-headed entrance with a panelled door and a bracketed segmental canopy. To the right of the center, there is a 20th-century plank door. The ground floor has seven varied windows with small-paned casements, mostly of two lights; the left end window is from the 19th century, while the rest are from the 20th century. The attic features one brick gabled dormer to the left of a small window, two 20th-century gabled weatherboarded dormers, and a window to the right end, all with two-light small-paned casements. The square framing is more regular at the right end.

The right return has been rebuilt in brick in the 20th century, while the left return retains wall studs and a timber-framed gable with brick rebuilding. This side has an attached single-storey wing, which is reputed to be a 19th-century Methodist chapel. This wing includes a tie beam over paired half-glazed doors and a battened door, a modillioned brick cornice, and two transomed casements, along with a cast-iron flue with stays. The interior has not been inspected. Note that No. 197 is a new listing.
