Description
The Old Mill is a former water mill located in Clifford Chambers, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with 20th-century alterations. It was used as a water mill until 1926 when an electricity-generating turbine was installed, and it served as a farm building from 1933 to 1972 before being converted into a dwelling. The structure is built of brick on a rubble plinth and features a slate roof with brick-coped gables and an end stack.
The building has two storeys plus an attic and a five-window range. It is topped with a modillioned brick cornice. The entrance, which is a 20th-century addition, is located at the right end and has a timber lintel. Flanking this entrance are two segmental-headed windows with two-light sliding casements, alongside a window with a 20th-century casement. The first floor mirrors this arrangement, with similar windows and a 20th-century window to the right. To the left, a later 19th-century addition includes a tall first-floor window with a 20th-century casement. The attic features three gabled dormers with tile hanging and small-paned casements, and there is a gabled loading door with a bracket at the left end.
The right side of the building has a round-arched opening that reveals a timber and iron breast-shot waterwheel. Above this, there are windows with 20th-century casements on each floor, including a segmental-headed window on the first floor. To the right, there is a mounting block and a 20th-century entrance and window to the rear outshut. The left side has a lean-to outshut with a window to the front and a large stack.
At the rear, there is a large lean-to outshut with a tile roof, above which is a beam with windows featuring sliding casements and two-light small-paned casements. To the right, there are two-light small-paned casements on each floor and a projecting lateral stack with rat trap bond above the eaves. A large three-light small-paned casement is located at the right end over a culvert, with a casement on the first floor, and there are four gabled dormers.
Inside, little machinery remains, but there are sluices and part of the lucam, as well as a second wheel pit with remnants of the turbine.
