Description
Hill House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from around 1800, though it may have earlier origins or incorporate older materials. It has undergone later additions and alterations, including those in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, partly resting on a stone cellar, and features a gabled plain-tile roof. There are two brick gable-end stacks and a brick dentil eaves cornice.
The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range. The west bay has been extended to the north as a short gabled wing. The cellar walls create a stone plinth under the west bay and wing, which has three casement windows on the west side, all set under brick segmental arches. The entrance is located on the north side at the angle with the wing and features a 20th-century porch roof supported by brackets. To the left of the entrance is an early 20th-century canted bay window. The first floor has two 2-light casements with bars, and there is one similar window on each floor of the gable-end wall of the wing, all under segmental brick arches.
The symmetrical south elevation includes a brick band at the first floor level, a central doorway with evidence of a brick infilled fanlight, and a 20th-century door. On either side of the doorway are three-light casements with upper transoms. Above these are three-light casements, and there is a central 2-light casement on the first floor, all under segmental arches. A gabled dormer with a 2-light casement is positioned above the east bay.
Inside, the house features exposed bridging beams, a staircase with turned newels, an exposed queen post truss made from reused timbers, and an inglenook fireplace. Hill House forms a group with Hill Barn and Hill Farm Barn.
