Description

Crab Mill is a house, originally an inn and later divided into three cottages, dated 1711. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with quoins, and has a stone slate roof with ashlar ridge details and end stacks. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has a six-window front. On the ground floor are six mullioned windows of two and three lights, alongside a later stone canted bay with a mullioned window. The first floor has a matching range of six two- and three-light mullioned windows, all with hood moulds and label stops, some of which have been restored. There are six gabled dormers in the attic. A moulded stone datestone inscribed "V.G..H./1711" is set into the first floor on the left side. An early 20th-century range in a matching style was added to the right. A lead firemark, possibly representing the Phoenix Insurance Company and inscribed 'PROTECTION', is also visible. A blocked window is present in the left gable end. Later 20th-century stone ranges extend to the rear. Inside, an original exterior wall features a three-light mullioned window with an original decorated catch and wrought iron hinges. The name "Crab Mill" likely originates from a time when cider was pressed on the site.
