Description
Whichford Mill is a mill house and mill complex with origins in the 17th century, and a date of 1711. It is constructed from squared coursed limestone with a rough plinth, quoins, and kneelers. It has gabled ends and a tile roof with brick end stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan. The front of the mill house is a two-storey, two-window range featuring 19th and 20th century two- and three-light casement windows with stone flat arches. A blocked doorway with a flat stone arch sits in the internal angle. Further 19th century casements are located at the rear, alongside one 17th century three-light mullioned window on the first floor. A moulded cartouche datestone on the first floor front is inscribed in bas-relief: 'M/RE/17ll', indicating Richard and Elizabeth Mathews. To the left is an 18th century two-storey stone mill with a slate roof, featuring 20th century casements and a door. Inside the house, there are chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and a large open fireplace with 18th century spice-cupboard doors.
