Description

This is a terrace of seven cottages built in 1938 by FWB Yorke and FRS Yorke, located on Birmingham Road in Stratford-upon-Avon. The cottages are constructed of buff brick with a wall of coursed squared stone at the ends, and have a single-pitch roof covered in asbestos tiles with brick chimneys. The gables face the front, to the left. There are 18 windows across the front, with a higher three-window section to the left. Wide, bracketed eaves are present. The entrances have flat canopies over half-glazed doors, with plank doors; one entrance is on the right end, and the others are in pairs flanking hatches. The ground floor features pairs of windows with two-light casements; the left end has a window, an entrance, and another entrance. The first floor has windows with two-light casements in pairs, with single-light windows above the ground-floor entrances. The rear elevation features wide, bracketed upward-slanting eaves and spur walls positioned between the houses. It has French windows and two-light casements, with horizontally sliding sashes on the first floor. Originally, some French windows had wooden pergola-like structures. Inside, the living and dining areas are open-plan, with a separate kitchen. The terrace has a path to the front, small terraces, gardens at the rear, and an allotment on an adjoining plot. The terrace was constructed for workers at Flower’s Brewery, and it is considered a precursor to a style of housing common in the 1960s, making it an early example of the design.
