Description
Napton Bottom Lock Cottage and the attached stable, located in Napton on the Hill, is a lock keeper's cottage that also served as a stable keeper's cottage. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with an addition from the late 19th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed brick and features a dentil cornice. It has a 20th-century tile roof and whitewashed brick end stacks.
The cottage has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys high with a three-window range. On the right side, there is a rendered brick basement projection that includes a brick segmental arched entrance to the cellar, along with a further projection that has a plank door and a string course. The building has a parapet, a flight of steps, and a raised area above. The entrance features a half-glazed flush four-panelled door, while a 20th-century window is located to the left. Both the door and window have painted rendered lintels, and there is a small window to the right.
The addition on the left has a slate lean-to roof and includes two-light casements of varying sizes and types, all with glazing bars. The attached stable, situated at a lower level on the right, has an old tile roof and consists of three bays. The open bay on the left has a wood lintel, and there are two stable doors, one of which has been partly replaced with a grille. The interior has not been inspected.
