Description

Ford Cottage and Ford Farmhouse are a house and adjoining cottage that were formerly two separate buildings. They date from the 17th century, with some remodelling in the early 19th century. The structures are timber framed with plastered brick infill, while the cottage also features some plain brick infill. The house has a slate roof and two brick ridge chimneys, and it displays many carpenter's marks. It has a three-unit plan, is two storeys high, and has a two-window range. The main entrance is located on the road front and features a 20th-century door and verandah, with 19th-century basements but no ground floor windows. The right end wall was rebuilt around 1982, although photographs show that the close studding with diagonal braces is still retained behind the four-window front. Inside, there is exposed framing on the rear wall, one ceiling beam with a broad chamfer, and an open fireplace that has a 20th-century grate but retains an old smoking cupboard. There is also an early 19th-century built-in dresser cupboard.

The cottage has a tiled roof and one ridge stack, and it has been extended to form a double L-plan. It is one storey with an attic and features 20th-century casements throughout. The end wall has exposed framing, and the entrance front is faced in early 19th-century brick with a brick dentil cornice. There is a projecting early 19th-century gabled wing and one dormer. Inside, the cottage has exposed framing and a broad chamfered ceiling beam. One bedroom features an old three-plank door with the original latch, and there are old floorboards throughout.
