Description

The Red Lion Inn is a public house located on Warwick Road in Stratford-upon-Avon. It dates from the late 18th century or possibly earlier and has been restored and altered over time. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a partly renewed tile roof with a brick end stack and two stacks along the front ridge. It is a single storey plus attic structure with a five-window range, although the right end is likely a later addition, and there is a single-storey wing on the left side.

Architecturally, the inn has a top modillioned brick cornice. The central entrance is set within a canted bay window and features paired half-glazed doors. To the right of the center, there is another entrance with a doorcase that includes pilasters and an open pediment, which is similar to the entrance of the single-storey wing. The ground floor has three large and two small canted bay windows, all with cornices above leaded glazing, and there is a similar canted bay on the wing. On the first floor, there are three hipped dormers with 20th-century casements, one larger hipped dormer with a three-light casement, and a window with a sill and a two-light casement at the right end. The right return features a 20th-century extension, while the rear includes a hipped wing and late 20th-century flat-roofed additions, along with six varied hipped dormers.

Inside, some beams are exposed. The Red Lion Inn plays an important role in closing the view down Guild Street and contributes to the vistas along Warwick Road, Waterside, and Bridge Foot, with the Stratford canal running behind the building.
