Description
32 and 33 Bridge Street is a town house with a facade dating from around 1800, although it is based on an earlier building that underwent extensive alterations in the late 20th century. The ground floor was re-fronted in 1863. The building is constructed of stucco and has a slate roof with a brick cross-axial stack and an end stack. It stands three storeys high and features a three-window range, with the right end being two storeys and defined by pilasters. The shop front includes panelled pilasters and an entablature, with a round-headed entrance that has a fanlight above paired three-panel doors and flanking windows with three round-headed lights. To the right end, there is a segmental-headed former carriage entrance that now has late 20th-century glazed doors replacing the 19th-century infill. The upper floors feature two-storey canted bay windows with 8:16:8-pane sashes, which may be from the 20th century. The right end has a canted oriel with a panelled apron and a hipped slate roof over four 12-pane horned sashes. Inside, some sections have coursed rubble and early brick walling on the left return, while the rest has been significantly altered and opens onto a shopping centre. This building was known as the Mulberry Tree Inn from the early 19th century.
