Description

No. 34 Bridge Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop. It was built in 1777 and underwent alterations in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick and features a tile roof with a truncated brick end stack. It has a right angle plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range. The exterior includes two stucco platt bands and coped gables.

The shop front, which is in a traditional style from the 20th century, has an entablature. The upper windows are adorned with rusticated wedge lintels with keys, featuring 16-pane horned sashes on the first floor and 8-pane horned sashes on the second floor. The right side of the building has a round-headed entrance with a fanlight above a half-glazed door, with stucco spandrels. Flanking this entrance are 8-pane horned sashes and a tripartite arrangement of 4:12:4-pane horned sashes. The first floor has French windows on either side of a plate glass sash, with a smaller sash to the right. The pediment above features a round-headed window with an enriched bracketed archivolt and key, flanked by segmental-headed dormers, all of which have horned sashes.

Additionally, there is a two-storey cast-iron verandah with a swept felt roof, fluted pilasters, and decorative foliage brackets on the ground floor, while the first floor has similar brackets on lattice supports. The stucco returns include an entrance with a Doric aedicule and pediment, along with a date inscription. The first floor features a small-paned window between panelled pilasters, and the rear has a round-headed window. This building faces Bridge Foot and is an important part of the townscape at the entrance to Stratford-upon-Avon.
