Description
35 and 36 Guild Street is an outbuilding that has been converted into a pair of cottages and is now used as an office. It dates from the late 16th century and has undergone restorations and alterations in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed with plaster infill set on a rubble plinth and features a tile roof, although the original brick stacks have been removed. The building has a two-unit right-angle plan and stands two storeys high.
The front façade includes an entrance with a 20th-century glazed door to the right of a central 20th-century glazing that spans both floors. There are also three 20th-century windows in the gable, which is adorned with two collars, struts, decorative barge-boards, and a finial. The returns and rear of the building have similar windows and entrances, with the rear featuring a glazed gable. The timber framing includes full-height posts, two rails, braced wall plates, and tie beams.
Inside, there are beams and a 20th-century stair. Originally, this building served as an outhouse at the end of the garden of No. 27 Bridge Street. Due to the encroachment of properties onto the old Guild Pits, now known as Guild Street, in the mid-19th century, it is set back from the street.
