Description
The Reddings is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with 19th and 20th century alterations and additions. It features a lias stone plinth, timber-framing encased in brick with roughcast in parts, and mock timbering, topped with a renewed tile roof. The original layout was L-shaped, with a massive ridge stack that has been rebuilt, infill to the right, and extensions to the left and rear.
The exterior is one-and-a-half to two storeys high and has a three-window range; the upper stage on the left is jettied. The central entrance has a part-glazed door within a 19th century porch. The ground floor includes three- and two-light casement windows, with the latter set under an elliptical arch. The upper stage features four-light, two-light, and one-light casement windows. The building has ridge and end star-shaped stacks and gabled roofs.
Inside the original range, there is an inglenook fireplace with a bressumer beam that relates to the massive ridge stack. The rear interior wall shows close-studding, and a beam in the rear room has a deep chamfer. Above the main inglenook, there is a fireplace with chamfered brick sides and a chamfered bressumer. The first floor reveals fairly extensive evidence of small, square panels of timber-framing. A jowled post is located on the rear wall, now part of the interior. The roof retains original chamfered purlins and rafters, with a collar-and-tie-beam truss featuring queen posts, which appear to be interrupted by a 16th or 17th century brick stack; the gable end wall is timber-framed.
The Reddings forms a group with the Barn at The Reddings.
