Description
Cross Lanes Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a roughcast exterior with imitation angle quoins that conceal a timber frame, along with a painted brick addition and a slate roof. The original layout consists of a two-cell plan, with an 18th-century gabled brick addition at the rear that forms an L-shape. The building has one storey and an attic, with 20th-century segmental-headed casements on either side of a half-glazed door located to the left of the center. There is a 20th-century gabled eaves dormer in the center, a large stepped external end stack to the left, and an integral end stack behind the ridge to the right. Additionally, there is an integral end stack for the rear range and a lean-to dairy at the angle between the two ranges.
Inside, the timber frame (with square panels) is said to have been found at the back wall of the 17th-century part, although it was concealed during the last survey in April 1986. The left ground-floor room features a deep-chamfered cross-beam ceiling and heavy joists, while the right room has a similar chamfered beam and a carved wall post in the cross wall. There is an infilled inglenook fireplace in the left stack, with an oak winder staircase behind it. The rear range includes a chamfered ceiling beam and an inglenook fireplace with a wooden lintel. The roof structure consists of collar and tie beams in two bays for the main range and one bay for the rear, with single purlins and straight windbraces.
