Description

The Gate Lodge, located approximately 200 meters south-west of Wootton Hall, was built in 1906 for Mr. Hughes. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a late Neo-Classical style with a symmetrical design.

The lodge is a single-storey, single-bay structure with a pedimented gable end at the front and three windows across. A full-height tetrastyle Ionic portico sits on plinths and includes a frieze and cornice that continue around the building. The pediment of the portico contains a carved coat of arms. Access is via three steps leading to a central six-panel door, which is framed by Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a pediment. On either side of the door are six-light casement windows, each set in a tooled surround with splayed shoulders and pediments.

The sides of the lodge feature a moulded plinth, and there is a central oculus with a scrolled surround above six-over-six sash windows, also within tooled surrounds with splayed shoulders and pediments. The wide eaves are supported by modillions. The rear of the building mirrors the front. A central stone ridge stack with a double stepped cornice completes the structure.

The lodge is part of a group of listed items on the Wootton Hall Estate (Wootton Park) and also forms a group with the Church of St Peter.
