Description

West Lodge and the attached gatepiers to the south are located on Congleton Road. This gate lodge, built for Great Moreton Hall around 1841-1843 by Edward Blore, is constructed from yellow sandstone ashlar and features a 20th-century roof made of cement tiles. The building has a single storey and a T-shaped plan.

The entrance front includes a projecting gabled bay on the right, which features a canted bay with a moulded plinth and three 20th-century lights at the center, along with casements at the corners. Above this is a brattished parapet, behind which is a hipped roof of ashlar that rises into the gable, adorned with moulded kneelers and a moulded coping topped with a finial. At the apex of the gable is a canopied niche that holds the Ackers shield, which is suspended from a stylized leather strap with a buckle.

To the left of the gabled bay is a recessed portion, and at the re-entrant angle, there is a gabled porch featuring a panelled wooden door and a quatrefoil in the gable, which also has a moulded coping, a kneeler to the left, and a finial at the apex. The left side has blank walling. A chimney stack made of ashlar, with four octagonal chimney pots and brattishing at the top, is located at the junction of the ridges. At the rear, there is a 20th-century extension with a flat roof.

The attached gatepiers to the south are octagonal on a plinth, topped with weathered caps over a moulded cornice, and are surmounted by fleur de lis finials.
