Description

Brook Farmhouse is an early 17th-century timber-framed farmhouse with rendered infill and a plain tile roof, likely originally thatched. The building is situated on a stone plinth common to the entire structure. A projecting wing on the right side exhibits close studding on both floors, with corner posts featuring decorative jowling at the top of the walls. This wing has two 3-light 19th-century casement windows to each floor. The gable of this wing displays decorative chevron strutting on the sides and a central post, above which is a queen-post truss. To the left of this wing is a range also with close studding on both floors. The entrance front features an 18th or early 19th-century door with six panels: the lower two are flush, and the upper four are raised and fielded, set within a moulded surround. A 19th-century gabled porch sits before the door. To the left of the door, there are two 4-light casement windows; the first floor has one gabled window with king post and chevron strutting to the gable. This window now contains a 3-light 20th-century casement, but was originally probably of 5 lights. The sides and rear of the farmhouse have been pebble-dashed. The rear features an outshut on the left and a projecting 17th-century wing on the right. The interior includes chamfered ceiling beams in the ground floor rooms and timber framing to internal walls. There is a 17th-century stairwell with small-framed walls and rectangular newel posts with rectangular knops. An ingle-nook fireplace is found in one ground floor room.
