Description

The gateway to the churchyard of St Mary is a 17th-century structure made of yellow sandstone ashlar. It features a central round archway with a hood-mould and lateral walls that have offsets. Above, there is a battlemented parapet adorned with crocketed pinnacles. A stone above the arch bears an inscription in 18th-century script that reads: "Thomas Dodd DD/Rector of this parish," along with a partially illegible line that records the date 1542, although Thomas Dodd actually died in the late 17th century. This gateway was previously listed together with the Church of St Mary, the Green.
