Description
The canopied tomb of a member of the Venables family is located in the churchyard of St. Mary. This graveyard tomb, originally situated within the church, dates from the late 13th century and is made of yellow sandstone ashlar. The tomb features diagonal buttresses at the corners and a moulded plinth adorned with a band of quatrefoil tracery. The top of the slab is moulded and displays two heavily worn figures, one male and one female, with their hands clasped in prayer. The canopy above has a shallow arch with a foiled outline and 17th-century crocketed pinnacles. The outer faces of the end walls are decorated with blind tracery featuring mouchettes, while the inner side above the figures' heads bears a 16th-century inscription that claims the tomb belongs to a Brereton, although it is more likely to be associated with the Venables family. The crocketed pinnacles at the top are believed to date from the 17th century.
