Description
The Boathouse at Keepers Farm is a building dating from the 18th century, originally a brick farm building that has been enhanced with ashlar remnants from the demolished 17th century Great Moreton Hall, creating an attractive feature. In the 19th century, a boathouse was added when a lake was formed nearby. The structure is built of red Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings, featuring timber framing and a roof covered in fishscale tiles.
It stands two storeys high with an attic. The lake front showcases the 19th century boathouse, which has a lower ashlar body with a pointed archway at the center. Above this archway, a row of wooden corbels supports a jettied gable that has decorative timber framing. The gable is adorned with pierced bargeboards and a moulded bargepost at the apex. To the left, there is an additional lean-to boathouse with a lean-to roof.
At the center, the earlier brick farm building has a hipped slate roof. On the right side, the boathouse features ashlar walling, while to the right of this is a brick tower with a 19th century lean-to of ashlar at ground level, which includes a 17th century two-light window with a chamfered ashlar surround. The left side has a canted bay window at the first floor level, topped with a hipped roof supported by a porch featuring four-centred arches. The rear wall includes a two-light window with a chamfered surround.
The rear also has a square-plan porch with four-centred arches at the front and left, with a doorway behind. To the right of the porch, a flight of steps leads to the top, where there is a doorway with a massive four-centred lintel. To the left of the porch, there is a section of ashlar walling with another two-light window that has a chamfered surround.
