Description

The icehouse tower at Great Moreton Hall was built between 1841 and 1843 by Edward Blore. It is constructed from coursed yellow sandstone rubble and stands three storeys tall. On the garden front, there is a section of wall that connects the tower to the drying ground. This wall features a central archway with a cambered head and three additional receding archways, which have channels carved as if to accommodate portcullises. Above this section is a walkway.

To the right is the hexagonal body of the icehouse, which includes a porchway on the left-hand canted face that supports the walkway above, leading to a blocked doorway. The right face has a two-light window on the ground floor and lancet windows on the first and second floors. The entrance front has a wall with a cambered arch on the right, topped with a battlemented parapet that includes machicolation. To the left of this wall is the tower, which has a doorway at its right-hand angle, with blank walling above.

Inside, the floors and roof have been removed. From the ground floor, there is a tunnel-vaulted corridor made of brick that leads to a circular chamber with a domed ceiling and a dished floor, also constructed of brick. The tunnel connects to this chamber at its upper body.
