Description
The Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made around the late 18th or early 19th century and an extension added in the late 20th century. It is constructed of dressed coursed stone rubble and features a stone tile roof with gable ends. The house has a one-room plan with a baffle-entry next to a large gable-end stack on the south side, and a winder staircase located over an oven on the opposite side of the stack.
In the late 18th or early 19th century, the roof was raised, partitions were added on the first floor, and a bay window was constructed at the front. The late 20th-century extension is a one-bay addition on the north side, which is set back from the front of the house.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic. The original part of the house is on the right, while the left side features a two-storey canted wooden bay with casement windows that have leaded panes. There is a doorway on the right with a stone frame that has bead arris moulding, leading to a 20th-century plank door and an open porch. At the rear, there is a two-light stone mullion window on the left and an 18th or 19th-century casement window on the right, also with leaded panes, adjacent to a 20th-century conservatory.
Inside, there is a chamfered axial beam with step stops at one end and unchamfered joists. The large stone fireplace has a chamfered timber lintel, which is stopped at one end, and includes an oven lined with 19th-century bricks and a cast-iron door. The floor is made of stone flags, and there are plank doors with wrought-iron strap hinges. The winder stairs are located beside the stack, and there is a window seat in the canted bay. On the first floor, there is a roughly chamfered axial beam and stud partitions. The roof structure has been replaced, except for the lower purlins.
