Description
Shottery Church of England Junior and Infant School is a building that was originally a tithe barn, likely dating from the 17th century. It was moved from Redditch and restored for use as a school between 1870 and 1871, designed by W Thompson. The structure features a timber frame with a rich variety of brick, tile, and rubble infill, topped with a renewed tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan and is a single storey. The building showcases square framing, wide eaves and verges, and a louvre to the ridge topped with a weatherboarded fleche.
The gabled front includes a 1:2:1-light canted oriel window with side lights, a hipped roof, and leaded glazing. Inside, there is an arch-braced tie beam, collar, and struts framing a panel that reads: SHOTTERY/ ST ANDREW/ NATIONAL/ SCHOOL, with a blue brick date panel flanking it that displays the year 1870 and initials below the window, along with an anchor and cross. The left side features a three-window range with a gabled end wing, which has two gableted three-light projecting windows flanking a four-light projecting window. The wing also includes a three-light window on the end and return. The right side has a catslide outshut with two lateral stacks, a gabled wing with a cross-casement window, and two gableted entrances. The interior is noted for its arch-braced tie beam and collar trusses, making it an interesting early example of reusing a structure.
