Description

This stable block, dating to the 1860s or 1870s, was designed by Thomas Newby for Mark Philips, and stands immediately north of the Welcombe Hotel. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof with brick stacks featuring diagonal shafts and caps. It follows a quadrangular plan with a projecting entrance front.

The stable block is single-storey with an attic. It has a top ashlar cornice and an ashlar-coped brick parapet. A forward break in the façade features a shaped gable with a finial above a four-centred carriage-way arch with continuous moulding. An oriel window above the arch has a moulded base and a hipped ashlar roof, with plain glazing. Double-chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with dripmoulds are positioned to either side, and there are two attic windows within shaped gables each topped with finials. A cross-axial stack with clustered shafts is visible.

The left return range has a two-storey central section, with a four-centred carriage door leading to a courtyard and two windows above. A clock turret features a louvred cupola and wind vane. The right return range incorporates four carriage arches to the courtyard, with four-centred heads, and other openings. An outer elevation includes a lean-to outshut with two gabled projections. The rear range is two-storeys high and includes a carriage way on the right and has an altered ground floor.

Interior features include varied entrances and windows, some of which are later insertions. The building is included on the list for its group value alongside the Welcombe Hotel.
