Description

30 Avenue Road is a house built in 1934 by H.W. Simister of Birmingham for B.C. Joseph. It features red brick on a blue brick plinth with a flat parapeted roof and brick stacks, showcasing the International Modern style. The house has two storeys and includes a stair turret that leads to the roof.

The entrance front has a six-window range on the first floor, which includes a two-storey window in a canted bay that lights the hall and staircase. The windows are metal casements, either one or three lights, set under concrete lintels. The ground floor has similar windows, with the entrance located at the far left. A horizontal banded oak door in a recessed doorway leads to an oak glazed inner door, and there is a projecting flat moulded canopy above. To the right end, there is a single-storey garage and service wing, while the left end features single and two-light casements.

The garden front has a distinctive symmetrical design, with a stair turret set back to the left leading to the roof and the service wing. The centre of the main part is recessed, featuring a full-length balcony that projects beyond the main façade. Characteristic corner windows are present on both floors at either end of the main part, and there are casements in the recessed section, with French windows leading to the loggia and balcony from all rooms. A dentilled eaves course runs around the house, with a parapet above that incorporates panels of bricks laid diagonally.

Inside, the well-preserved interior features full-height flush panelling in the entrance hall, staircase, and landing, with horizontal stripes in lighter wood that continue over the doors. The open well stair has a matching panelled balustrade with a curving handrail. The sitting room is also panelled and includes a fire surround and fitted cupboards. The dining room features contrasting wood stripes in its panelling, with doors that match the pattern, along with a fitted sideboard and fire surround with cupboards. The bathroom for the main bedroom retains its original tiling and bath. This house is a well-designed, high-quality example of its period that has seen little alteration.
