Description
The Smithy is a pair of houses, likely originally a house and forge, dating from the early to mid-18th century. They were altered and slightly raised in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed sandstone, with a single-storey section to the right made of coursed rubble and featuring brick on the return side and rear. The roofs are slate, with brick stacks at the ends and along the ridge. The layout follows a baffle entry three-unit plan, and the structure has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range.
The third bay features a 19th-century four-panelled door, above which are wide 15-pane sash windows to the right and 16-pane sashes to the left. There is a fire window on the right side. The entrance to No. 26 is located in a one-storey, two-window range and has a plank door, with a low wide 18-pane sash to the left and a shuttered opening to the right. Blackened wood lintels are present throughout the building. The interiors have not been inspected.
