Description
Pipewell Cottage is a cottage with origins likely dating back to the 15th or 16th century, featuring later alterations. It is constructed using cruck construction with large timber framing and whitewashed brick infill, and it is said to have some lath and plaster infill on the left return side. The right return side and rear wall are rendered and possibly rebuilt. The thatched roof has deep boarded eaves, a rendered ridge, and external stacks, with the right stack having its shaft removed. The cottage has a three-unit plan, is one storey high with an attic, and has a two-window range. The entrance is located at the rear. The windows include small two-light casements with glazing bars, three ground floor windows, a fixed light window, and a small window below the eaves. There are swept dormers, and the plank doors at the rear are sheltered by a 20th-century open porch. To the left, there is a 19th-century whitewashed brick range with a slate roof and double doors on the return side. Inside, the cottage features exposed pairs of cruck blades, exposed framing, and ceiling beams. There is an open fireplace with a bread oven, and several rooms contain 17th-century panelling that has been imported from elsewhere.
