Description

The Old Halt is a cottage dating back to the 17th century, with substantial rebuilding and alterations occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed with brick infill, with the front whitewashed. The roof is thatched, featuring a brick ridge and external stacks on the right end and left side. The original layout was a three-unit plan, but this has been extended to an irregular T-shape with ranges at the rear and to the right. The cottage is one storey high with an attic, and originally had a one-window front. Some timber framing remains visible on the front. A large, late 20th century half-glazed porch is centrally positioned, with a six-panelled door on the left return side. Inside the porch are a glazed door and a casement window. The windows on the front are casements, with three lights to the left and two lights to the right, each with differing glazing bars. A central swept dormer window has two lights with cross glazing. A low, single-storey range on the right has a two-light casement window. A further 19th century range, likely originally separate, is constructed of whitewashed brick with a tile roof and features windows and a two-panelled door set within brick segmental arches. The left return side of the main range includes a large chimney breast. Inside, there is exposed timber framing. A room to the left has been combined with the space above, featuring a large fireplace, possibly altered. The hall has a mutilated fireplace and reveals a moulded ceiling beam. Other rooms contain chamfered beams, and some old ledged and battened doors remain.
