Description
Wolvey Hall is a house dating back to approximately 1676, with significant remodelling in the 1889. Constructed using Flemish bond brick with string courses and some roughcast, the roof is covered with plain tiles. Internal stacks are of blue brick, and ridge stacks are located at the rear. The building has a complex plan, featuring slightly-projecting cross wings.
The house is two storeys and an attic, with a six-window front. The two-bay central section contains an open porch in the left angle. A segmental-arched doorway is flanked by openings, and a pediment above displays a coat of arms and the dates 1676 and 1889. A six-panelled door with an overlight sits within a moulded surround, alongside leaded single lights. A stone plaque above the door details the history of the building and its owners. An eight-pane sash window is located to the right. The left wing has a large, canted ground-floor bay window, while the right wing features a French window. Throughout, windows are topped with gauged brick flat arches. The first and second floors show symmetry. The cross wings are two-bay structures, with cross windows featuring horizontal glazing bars. Roughcast gables are punctuated by three-light wood mullioned and transomed windows above. The roof has two pedimented dormers, each with a two-light casement and horizontal glazing bar. A single-storey range on the left side has a crow-stepped gable and a French window, with a slate sundial positioned above. A panelled wood semi-circular oriel window sits on a roughcast base supported by a carved corbel on the right return side of the main range.
The interior features a panelled entrance hall and an open-well staircase. The lower portion of the staircase, dated 1677 with a vase panel on the landing, has an elaborate open scrollwork balustrade with moulded roundels, newels with moulded square finials, and an openwork drop. A balustrade and gate across the flight to the cellar contain large 17th-century twisted balusters. The upper part of the staircase is open string with column-on-vase balusters. A room to the right contains panelling and two 18th-century round-arched alcoves flanking a bolection fireplace. A room to the rear incorporates fragments of 17th-century and earlier stained glass. A room to the left contains an old chamfered beam, and a former open fireplace has a moulded cornice and fragments of old carvings. A first-floor room also features chamfered beams.
