Description

The Old House Farmhouse is a house dating to the 17th century, with alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It comprises two builds, with an L-shaped plan, incorporating a one-storey, two-bay range on the right and a two-storey, attic, two-bay crosswing. The original construction was timber framed with brick infill, with a stone plinth; later brick walling was added to the one-storey range, and the left return side has rendered infill. Thatched roofs cover the building, with brick ridge stacks. The one-storey range has 20th-century wooden casements and a French window to the gable end, with a boarded door to the rear. The crosswing gable features square-panelled framing with a three-light window to the ground floor and a two-light window above. The interior of the one-storey range reveals a raised cruck frame with light scantling, ridge set on a saddle block, original purlins and rafters, and an inglenook fireplace with an ashlar-lined recess, wooden bressumer, and exposed brick smokehood. The crosswing’s inglenook fireplace on the ground-floor rear includes a small oak wall cupboard, while the front room displays a heavily-moulded spine beam, possibly re-used from a demolished building nearby. Exposed timbers are found on the first floor and in the attic. The original structure incorporates jowled wallposts, diagonal braces to a cambered tie beam, and a visible truss with studs below the collar and V-struts above, now glazed.
