Description

Nos. 138 and 140 High Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 18th century and was remodeled and extended in the early to mid-19th century. The building features plastered walls that are lined to resemble ashlar, a plain tile roof, and brick ridge stacks. It has a roughly L-shaped plan.

The east elevation is two storeys high and includes a boldly moulded eaves cornice and a plain coped parapet that extends around the gable of the left-hand bay. The front has three windows: No. 138 on the right has glazing bar casements with straight hood moulds and a central door with a blocked fanlight. No. 140 on the left features a Venetian window on each floor and a six-panel door to the right with a panelled doorcase.

The south elevation is also two storeys and has a cornice and parapet that continue from the east front. It has a one-to-four window arrangement with 19th-century glazing bar casements that have three-centred heads and hood moulds with block stops and raised keys. The left-hand bay projects forward; this is a 19th-century extension that has a dentilled eaves band and a hipped roof, with the ridge higher than that of the main building. The west front of this extension contains two bays of 16-pane glazing bar sashes with segmental heads and hood moulds, along with a central square porch that has a rectangular overlight.
